I was working in Processing Mobile and was able to get serial communication working -- the issue was just the requirement of needing a USB host on the other end of the cable connected to the phone. If your application involves a computer, that shouldn't be a problem, and indeed it wasn't in my case.
Sorry I can't be more help. You may want to have a look at Processing Mobile to see if it gives you any clues as to what's going wrong when you're trying to access the serial port.

Vladimir: I haven’t done any more work on the matter, but your problem sounds like a bug in your software, not a limitation of the hardware. I was working on J2ME applications on i415 (which has normal serial port) about 2 years.
Windows stands it as "Motorola iDEN modem" (on virtual COM9 in my case).
J2ME application can get the list of available serials. It returns "COM0".
Unfortunately J2ME application can not open any connection on COM0: "IOException: no cable...".
So, I see that in this phone we have just the old Java machine (it informs about available "COM0" without of presence one), but I do not know what happened with hardware serial. May be it just "hangs on the air", or native software always returns "no cable" status to the Java core.
Unfortunately the all electric components are hidden behind the shields and I have not scheme...
Have you any progress with this problem? Any ideas?

I’v got i425 just now. I wanted to send data from J2ME application to “somewhere” this phone can.<br
